Informative Review: “First of all I am a man, so I don’t give up and write a negative review when I can’t figure out how to use the needle threading feature.

That reminds me of my ex-wife. Back in 1988, she was going to make all kinds of nice clothes for our daughter, like her cousin’s wife did for their three daughters. She told me to buy her a sewing machine and she would learn to sew.

I doubted it, because she was lazy, so I bought the basic machine (Singer Model 4530). It did the basic sewing for normal users much like these Singer Heavy Duty machines, but not made to sew heavy thicknesses of fabric or something like leathers.

As expected, she let the machine sit for months never signing up for sewing lessons. One day I came home from work and she was furious. She sad the sewing machine was no good. I ask her what happened.

She told me her neighbor wanted to sew some sheets together to make long table cloths, for the tables for her daughter’s wedding reception. She said the two of them tried all afternoon to thread the bobbin and it wouldn’t work.

I asked her if they read the directions in the instruction book. She said, “NO!”. I told her she needed to read the directions. She got furious with me. You see she was one of those women who would never admit she was ever wrong, and if you pointed out she was wrong she would get even with you forever. She refused to ever learn to sew, from that point on.

I knew how to sew. I self taught myself how to sew, because I needed my pants pegged, which was the style back when I was a teenager, and my Mom worked 16 hours a day to provide for me. She could sew, but to peg my pants would take up her Sunday (her one day off a week), and wanted that day to be with my Mom.

This has turned out great for me. I grew up to be an outdoorsman in Idaho. I am an Collegiate All American in the field of Archery. I was Candidate for the U. S. Olympics, so knowing how to sew didn’t make any lessor a man any more than learning to cook so dinner was ready when my Mother got home from a 16-hour day.

Now back to the Singer sewing machines. I took that standard duty Singer 4520 sewing machine my ex-wife cursed and put it to work. Of course, I hemmed my pants to the right length, and shortened the sleeves on my shirts, but I did more than it was designed to do. I have made several vests out of heavy duck and canvas. I have made bags for heavy duck, canvas, ballistic nylon, and leather. I have made holsters and knife sheaths out of canvas, ballistic nylon, and leather. I have sewn thicknesses up around 1/4″.

After 28 years, my good old sewing machine is skipping some stitches, and showing some signs of wear. It sews well on regular fabrics it was designed for, but I build survival equipment for outdoorsmen. Skipping stitches and having to re-sew thing just won’t do. I bought the heavy duty model, and have tested it finding it to be an excellent machine, plus it sews thick fabrics and leathers. I have ran the test.”

Informative Review: “I used to love to sew by hand when I was a little girl, I wanted to do thrift-fips and even try to make my own clothes.

I’m not the best learner but OMG this machine is so easy to use, even the accessories! The instruction book HAS IT ALL. My first project was a dress. Yes, I went all the way there. It went so well!!! I did a backpack (with cotton fabric) and it went really good too.

Yesterday, My boyfriend had issues with his gaming chair armrests. They were cracked (the fake leather) and it looked terrible. We gave it a try and dissembled the leather and just replace the damage tops with new leather that we had hanging in there from a previous project.

I thought my machine wouldn’t take 2 to 3 layers of leather and IT DID!!! I would upload pictures but Amazon doesn’t let me for some reason.

This machine is THE BEST.”

Another Helpful Review: “I would recommend this machine for a 1st time sewer. Easy to thread with/without auto threader. Sews a very nice seam. No skipped stitches or bunching. Nicely winds the bobbin nice and even.

I would recommend for anyone wanting something light weight to carry to a class. Since I have a very nice/ heavy Husqvarna, this is my intention.

One thing I cannot attest to is how it will sew on heavier fabrics such a canvas, leather or denim. Intend to use my heavier machine for these chores.”

One More Review: “Great machine! Accurate, very easy to use! Helpful instructional DVD or you can watch the video on line. Doesnt jam or move around. Fast stitching with a pedal to adjust the speed and start & stop. Easy to move around but heavy enough to hold its own while sewing. Strong enough for jeans or leather and gentle enough for silk.”

Informative Review: “I just purchased this Singer 4423 Heavy Duty sewing machine and have only had it for a couple of days. I will use it for doing simple repairs on clothing. I’m a 67 year old man and have never used a sewing machine before, so I can only attest to the machine being easy to setup and operate. I did have some problems with the bobbin thread balling up in its compartment, but that was due to bad thread.

Once I purchased good quality thread that problem was solved. The instructions that shipped with the machine were pretty sparse, but I downloaded the manual from Singer’s website, plus several videos on YouTube that detailed the proper maintenance and operation of this particular model sewing machine.

Only time will tell if this machine holds up over the next few years. My best advice is to experiment, be patient, read the manual thoroughly and take advantage of the many resources available on the internet for this machine!

Update — Since receiving this sewing machine I have sewn nylon webbing, leather and other thick fabrics!! I just repaired a cellphone case and this machine went through two thin layers of leather and a cardboard insert! I just love this sewing machine and hope it holds up for a few years!!

UPDATE: 08/09/2021

Well, I’ve had this Singer 4423 sewing machine for a few months now and still love it! As I previously mentioned, I’m a novice when it comes to sewing!! Since my initial review, I have sewn several pot holders, aprons and have now completed 3 Hawaiian shirts, 1 work shirt and am currently working on 2 western shirts! I must admit I have experienced many of the problems other users have complained about, but these were solved by simply taking the time to read the manual and doing a little research on the internet. This is a simple and reliable machine and if you take the time to do your homework it will serve you well though many projects!!

Update 02/13/2023: I’ve had this little Singer 4423 HD for almost 2 years now and can’t say enough good things about it. I have sewn everything from quilting cotton, to denim and even some light leather with this machine and it has never let me down. I believe this machine is the best unit at its price point!

Another Helpful Review: “

Pros: many, among which the ease of setup, excellent pedal control, true to the heavy duty build (sewing through heavy vinyl layers with ease), stretch stitches and online manual (means paper-free).

Cons: automatic needle threader does not work at all, despite me repeating every step in the instruction video. Short pedal cable, making me relocate my project area close to the outlet.
My background: over the years I’ve casually taken on various intermediate projects, including Halloween costumes.

My previous machine, White(year and make unknown), broke in the middle of sewing velour with double vinyl leather layers. By quality comparison, Singer feels like a luxury machine, where nothing tangled, malfunctioned or broke. Threading was a breeze – hard to mess it up when the numbers steps are on the machine parts. I did follow all instructions and double checked my needle and thread selection before enjoying my first Singer.

To those stating it did not sew through heavy material layers, remember to do a test run on a scrap of your project, select correct needle and thread, tension and go ~slow~. Same goes for the pedal – assist the start with your hand, and press the pedal very gradually. I’ve had no issues doing that. I’ve also found that even my old clunker machine was impacted by those factors and these are a common issue with many sewing machines.

Overall I’m in love with Singer and will not switch it out for another – it is a very satisfying sewing experience, making me wonder how many projects I could have enjoyed better had I purchased Singer sooner.”

Informative Review: “I bought this little guy as a back up for my Singer Quantum 7350. I’m sew a lot of unusual fabrics and am more than a little hard on sewing machines. My daily sewing projects include costuming (vinyl, fur, etc); household uses (curtains, bedding); and formal wear.

It never fails that when I’m approaching a deadline on a big project my sewing machine decides it needs to pay a visit to my friendly neighborhood sewing repair shop for a tuneup. It’s about 10 years old now and if you saw what I put it through, you’d understand why. I’ve also dropped it twice.

I will admit, I don’t actually expect this Singer to be a ‘heavy-duty’ machine. Not my definition of heavy-duty anyway. Not for this price. What I do expect is something that will be reliable, no frills, and hold up to my abuse. I think that’s what I’ve got. It has only been three days and I have already made a monk’s robe and caught up on my minor repair work. The needle had to be changed immediately.

I don’t know why, but sewing machines always seem to come with sub par, blunt needles. Once I had, it was humming along smoothly in minutes. It threads just like the other two Singers I’ve owned and sews a nice straight, tight stitch.

It’s also not as loud as some of the other reviews have said, but that may be just because I’ve always tended to go for the more basic, utilitarian models rather than fancy electronics and 100 stitch patterns that I’ll never use and am used to a little noise when I sew.

All in all, I’m very pleased so far. I’ll update this review if that changes! Happy sewing ladies and gents.

UPDATE (August 29th 2011): I might have to eat my words about this not really being ‘heavy duty.’ I sewed quite a bit of light to medium weight leather this past weekend and it didn’t so much as hiccup. Bravo Singer!

(Be sure to use the right type of needles if you plan on doing this. Universal needles will not perform well with leather no matter how tough the machine. :))”

Another Helpful Review: “30+ years ago I learned to sew on my mother’s Singer. It was simiar to this model in that it was metal and very simple. 5 years ago I recieved a fancier machine as a gift. The embroidery stitches were fun but it seemed like there was always some issue or another.

The computer went out on it right before Christmas and I went searching for a basic machine that would work on jeans, gortex dirt bike pants, and upholstery fabrics as well as my more typical garmet sewing and quilting.

I do believe that I found it with this model! It is super easy to use and goes at a faster speed than my last one. Today I whipped up a purse that I made with a heavier, tapestry type upholstery fabric and faux leather. I am very pleased with how well the machine worked and being able to focus on sewing and not futzing around with a fickle machine.”

Informative Review: “I never sewed before in my life but have many things that need a little fixing and want to reapholster a couch. I didn’t want one of those cheesy beginner machines so opted for this one Watched a few videos from their support blog and I was sewing in no time. It does have some plastic parts but I haven’t had any problems with it. I would recommend this machine!”

Another Helpful Review: “Absolutely love this thing. I’d never previously owned a computerized sewing machine so the concept was totally new to me, but now I’m never going back. The thing works like a dream. I’ve used it for several projects over the course of the past few years and I’ve never had any issues.

The manual is very helpful and thorough and it came with all the feet I could possibly need. Couldn’t recommend this machine enough.”

One More Review: “Ordered Apr 29 arrived May 14. I am from the Philippines so i have to use a stepdown transformer bec we use int’l 220V in here. It works great and very good for a beginner like me. The stitches are very nice and neat. The stitch selection display is quite blurred though. Overall i like the performance of this machine.”

6. SINGER | Heavy Duty 4452 Sewing Machine , Gray

Informative Review: “I didn’t receive a manual, but you can easily print one from their website by typing in the model number 4452 and going down to that section. On this page they also have great videos to learn about the machine, its features, and its accessories. Also, there is a link to the free app you can install onto your phone and see exactly how to setup and use the machine!

There are special accessories that I wouldn’t know what they were for until I saw the video on their site, like one that lifts the feed dog over big bulky seams to effortlessly sew through the bulky areas! Also, a non-stick foot for leather and vinyl, and other great features. I’m happy so far, and will update if I need to change my review.

Update day 2: I had issues with the fabric not feeding. Hours later I found a fix. I simply did a few stitches in reverse first and it seemed like it “reset” the machine. This of course was after frustrating myself adjusting tension, rethreading the machine over and over, trying “higher quality” thread and bobbin, reading the manual, and more.

Update: Love this machine! I’ve sewn lots of things with it and have had no other issues besides the one time I mentioned above. Works great and is powerful.”

Another Helpful Review: “Went through both a Brother and Viking (both were embroidery models) with each becoming unusable for various reasons.

So, I just decided to go with a more basic unit without the bells and whistles I was not using anyway. This unit has all the stitches I will need along with the power to feel confident sewing denim/leather projects.

The auto threading feature worked once before failing. I am working on finding out why. Overall, it is a great unit so far and the Singer name makes me feel pretty confident that I will be able to have it services if something happens down the road.”

BobbyB

One More Review: “Easy to use and heavy duty! The project I was working on was thick and it was a challenge to get it under the foot but I managed. I haven’t figured out the automatic needle threading yet but I didn’t buy the machine for that and I can thread the needle. I have a Bernina that I use for clothes and other fabrics that would not do what I needed for this project. THe price was good so now I can sew leather and upolster and other heavy duty things that before I used a hand needle and threaded it with pliers. This machine is GREAT!!!”
